First-Timers
✓ Very important: The voltages, 220V and 230V, are used in parts of South Africa but not in United States of America. Order the proper power adapter: https://www.amazon.com/BESTEK-Universal-100-220V-Converter-Worldwide/dp/B07T68SRWP/ref=pd_lpo_sccl_1/144-9135896-3620961?pd_rd_w=t3xdB&content-id=amzn1.sym.4c8c52db-06f8-4e42-8e56-912796f2ea6c&pf_rd_p=4c8c52db-06f8-4e42-8e56-912796f2ea6c&pf_rd_r=5J37RMC0P6F7BTQTHMXX&pd_rd_wg=U4U5F&pd_rd_r=8292963d-b78c-456c-8501-088c23797c8f&pd_rd_i=B07T68SRWP&th=1
✓ Do start your Cape Town trip on a high pointMake it a priority to get up on top of Table Mountain or Lions Head as soon as you can upon arrival in Cape Town.
✓ Download WhatApp, upgrade your phone plan to international travel to save on incurring the international changes for the time period you'll be in South Africa. Optionally, you can get a local SIM card from MTNGet a SIM card upon arrival at Cape Town's airport and go with MTN because they have cheaper packages than Vodacom and their network doesn't go down with load shedding
✓ Do try some South African dishes, thoughOur favorite South African specialties to look out for during your Cape Town travels include:Bobotie. A heavily-spiced minced meat pie with egg baked on top.Malva pudding. A sweet and sticky bread pudding.Gatsbys. Gigantic subway sandwiches stuffed with fries, cheeses, sauces, and various meats. As we share in our unique Cape Town restaurant guide (and on the free treasure map), our favorite is from Cozy Corner.Boerewors, droerwors, and biltong. Spiced meats. The latter two are dried.
✗ Don't withdraw too much cash. When most arrive in Cape Town, they may withdraw R3,000 in cash. However, do this from the airport in the US or at your bank..
✗ Don't go anywhere without a warm layerThe Mother City, as Cape Town is nicknamed, is a hormonal, temperamental beauty. No matter how pleasant her weather currently appears to be, never ever count in it staying that way because it changes fast and can differ enormously depending on which side of Table Mountain you're on.So bring a warm layer with you wherever you go, just in case.
✓ Do talk to your Uber driversThis especially applies if you choose to disregard our previous Cape Town travel tip.Uber drivers come from all over Cape Town, South Africa, and the African continent. About 90% of them have something interesting to say and they are more than happy to share it with you if you ask. Your challenge is to figure out what it is and get it out of them.
✗ Don't be careless on Long StreetLong Street is Cape Town's grimy but go-to downtown party street.

Personal note: I got a few of the above vaccines 7 years ago during my first trip to SA and had side effects, and have not sense gotten any more vaccines for any of the following trips over the last 7 years. South Africa is one the most development countries in Africa.
